Free Boat Rental Agreement Template (PDF)

Renting out a kayak, small motorboat, dinghy, or another watercraft means more than handing over a set of keys. A boat rental agreement can record the vessel, the rental period, the people responsible for it, and the arrangements for its safe return.

Why use a boat rental agreement?

Use on the water depends on weather, local rules, operator experience, and equipment. A written agreement helps clarify which vessel was provided, what comes with it, and how incidents or delays should be handled. It does not replace required licensing, safety checks, insurance, or local boating rules.

What to consider including

  • Vessel type, name or registration number, and other identifying details.
  • Renter or responsible operator information and any applicable licence details.
  • Pickup location, permitted area, rental dates and return time.
  • Rental price, security deposit if used, and fuel arrangements.
  • Supplied life jackets, paddles, navigation equipment, keys, and accessories.
  • Existing damage, engine or hull condition, and handover notes.

A checklist to think through for your situation. It is not a list of clauses: the blank PDF’s own sections and lines are listed above.

Before leaving the dock

Review the weather, operating instructions, return procedure, and what to do if the boat becomes disabled. Count safety equipment and note visible damage. For powered boats, check any operator qualification and coverage requirements separately from the agreement.

FAQ

Questions

Does this agreement replace a boating licence?

No. Any operator licences, registrations, safety equipment, and insurance requirements are separate and depend on the location and vessel.

What if the boat is returned late because of weather?

Agree in advance how delays and unexpected conditions should be reported and handled, while prioritizing safety over return timing.

Is the PDF download the same thing as a signed agreement?

No. A blank PDF is a starting document. It is not a completed or signed rental agreement. Fill in the applicable details and obtain the required signatures before relying on it.
